Navigating life after cancer

The end of cancer treatment can be a complex transition. While some experience relief and celebration, others face unexpected challenges. These may include heightened anxiety or depression, persistent physical symptoms, and a sense of disorientation in one's body and life. This range of experiences underscores the personal nature of the cancer journey, and the need for continued support beyond active treatment.

Cancer survivorship care addresses many concerns

  • Resolve lingering symptoms

  • Regain strength and wellbeing

  • Support mental and emotional health

  • Reduce risk factors for cancer recurrence

  • Address late effects of cancer treatment

  • Navigate menopause

  • Understand nutrition and supplements

  • Improve overall health and longevity

Naturopathic medicine is well suited to address the complex needs of cancer survivors.

Our whole-person approach considers mental, physical, and spiritual health, which is crucial given the interconnected nature of symptoms and the high prevalence of emotional concerns post-cancer. Our extended visit times allow for a deep understanding of individual needs and the implementation of comprehensive management strategies, including nutrition, exercise, herbal medicine, and lifestyle modifications. A collaborative approach with other health care providers is often optimal, and I frequently refer to other providers as needed for counselling, medication, blood work, or other treatments. This holistic, personalized, and collaborative care model effectively supports the multifaceted journey of cancer survivorship.

Specific symptoms and side effects I commonly work with include:

  • Physical: Fatigue, memory and cognitive concerns, changes in sexual function, nerve problems, digestive complaints, menopausal symptoms, loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), and pain.

  • Emotional: anxiety, worry about recurrence, depression

  • Late effects: cardiovascular disease risk, osteoporosis risk, fertility concerns, insulin resistance/diabetes
